It's been a hot minute since I've updated my blog. My apologies. I am back in Boston, MA because I just got ankle surgery on Friday (wamp, wamp). The good news is that I am on the mend. I arrived on November 1st and my surgery wasn't until November 6th. I had some time during the week to be with friends and to make it to this amazing Urban Oasis every day, twice per day. I've love this restaurant for years. I went to it when it was out in Lowell, MA. This really says a lot, because you know this if you are from Wellesley or Boston, you never head out to Lowell! It just doesn't happen. But I went many years ago, because I heard of this delicious Urban Oasis. Better yet, I heard that the Urban Oasis was heading to Boston. I loved this place so much, I applied to work there before it even opened. I was hired. Mind you, I was still working at McLean Hospital doing psychopharmacology research, taking night classes at Harvard Extension School, and  trying to keep my life balanced. In the end, I decided not to work there, this was before the Cambridge Life Alive opened roughly 5 years ago. Wow, the success that this all RAW vegetarian restaurant has had is amazing. As I mentioned earlier, I went twice per day for their yummy goodness. Below are a few photos of my favorite dishes. YUM!

And it actually tastes like a carrot cake. The Carrot Cake smoothie contains hemp protein, carrot juice, banana, ice cream (vegan), rice milk, and cinnamon.

Chock full of vegetables (corn beets, broccoli and kale), avocado, legumes, sprouted grains, it is amazing. I sub the cheese and add avocado to make it vegan. Instead of the sauce it comes with I use the Nutri-Lemon Flax Sauce.

Hello August! How is it possible that over half the year is already gone? This was supposed to be the year I rip off all of my band-aids and stand in my own strength, ready to feel and absorb all that the world sends my way. Some of my band-aids have been removed (see: Volume 1, Issue 1 of Laura Mary Healthy Living), others are in the process of being removed. Nonetheless, as the middle of the year has begun to sink in, I’ve focused more on the idea of time. Time is precious. Fleeting. In this year alone, people I love have passed away and been born. Nothing is permanent in life, and especially not time. I am practicing savoring my time, both with myself and with others, and using it efficiently to learn and grow. With that being said, I have some major events to announce that are happening in the month of August.

Starting on August 1st, I am leading a yoga teacher training at Power Yoga Hawaii (see guest post by Valerie Shaindlin, Why You Should Consider Yoga Teacher Training, on page 5). I have never led my own teacher training, so this is a huge step for me. I can’t wait to see all of the students grow into teachers over the 9- week program. Preparation for teacher training has been challenging and humbling, and it has pushed me to be a student again. Just as when I went through training, I feel inspired to continue my svadhyaya (self study). I needed the reminder more than ever to always go back to taking the seat of a student. Learning never ends! When I was asked to lead teacher training, I was nervously excited, and without hesitation I agreed to do it. I, just like everyone else, thrive in the space of challenge. While I am always aiming to deepen my yoga practice, holding my own teacher training has provided a new level of challenge for me.

In the month of August I am holding my first “Social Media Challenge”. If you participate in social media, I’m sure you’ve seen people do these before: 30 days of pictures typically focused on asanas (yoga postures), only one of Patanjali’s ashtanga (Eight Limbs) of Yoga. This one will be a little different in that it will indirectly explore the other seven limbs of Patanjali’s ashtanga. The daily challenges will include tasks like writing a letter to an old friend, or waking up to watch the sunrise. I’ll have prizes from local vendors including Lululemon Ala Moana Center, Lily Lotus, Core Power Yoga, Jugo Life Juicery, and Salty Air Hawaii. Every morning, the daily challenge, along with a few words of inspiration and encouragement, will be posted on my Instagram page and my Facebook page (links in footer). Give me a follow if you’re planning on participating!

Starting on Sunday August 2nd, and every Sunday thereafter, I will be leading a guided meditation at Power Yoga Hawaii – Kahala. Class will be 2 hours long, starting at 6:00 PM, and will consist of 1 hour of vinyasa flow followed by 1 hour of guided meditation. This is a class that I have been aching to work into my schedule for so long now. It’s not only a class style that I enjoy taking myself, but one that will offer immense benefits to my students. Over the last decade or so, meditation has received a boost in scientific research due to the increase in popularity of the practice. Several studies have demonstrated the benefits of mind/body interventions, including reduced stress and enhanced wellness through a relaxation response. Studies have also found that mind/body interventions combat adverse clinical conditions related to stress, such as hypertension, anxiety, diabetes, and aging. It’s no secret that there are clear benefits to practicing meditation, yoga, deep breathing and prayer. According to Herbert Benson, Harvard Medical School professor of medicine at Mass General and co-senior author of a groundbreaking report in the open-access journal PLOS ONE, “now for the first time we’ve identified the key physiological hubs through which these benefits might be induced.” Benson’s study out of Benson-Henry Institute for Mind/Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center found that immediate changes in the expression of genes involved in immune function, energy metabolism and insulin secretion occurred through eliciting the relaxation response (state of deep rest induced through practices such as yoga and meditation). In this class we will explore the potential of yoga and meditation as a form of preventative medicine. I’m beyond excited to offer this mediation class for my students. Feel free to drop in for yoga at 6:00 PM, meditation at 7:00 PM, or both!

All these upcoming events, combined with the fact that we are well into the second half of the year, fall into the general theme of this newsletter: why not today? Sometimes changes you make in your life are precipitated by big events,
but why wait for something colossal in to happen to bring about a change or to do something that has been on your mind or that you have wanted to do for a while? Life is too short to not believe in yourself; know that you can do it and spice up your life with some change.

It’s easy to come up with reasons why you can’t change something in your life. You may be afraid of what people may think about you. Or maybe you are not coasting
through life right now. You could already face enough adversity on a daily basis, and the last thing you need is more chaos in your daily routine. If this is the case, you are in a perfect position to make a meaningful change for yourself. A lot of times when life is rocky, we ignore very important and much needed self-care. I am here to encourage you to go the extra mile. What I mean is to try something new that challenges you, something that is for lack of a better word “hard.” It could quite literally mean walking, running, or swimming one extra mile. If, on the other hand, you have a nice routine going for youself right now, work is going well, relationships are just dandy, you follow a fitness/health plan, lah dee dah, maybe it is time to mix it up. Up-level yourself by stepping into a new challenge. What better way to jump into the present moment than to feel the nerves, to focus, and to switch up your routine for the better - to intentionally decide to grow today. The world is your oyster, as they say in New England!

Take some time today to sit and think about one way you can alter your life towards growth. It does not need to be a colossal change either. Small changes add up and are a lot easier to begin and maintain. They also create meaningful patterns for the future. In Small Change by Susan & Larry Terkel, they say, “The power of small change lies in how much easier small changes are to initiate and maintain, and how meaningful are the patterns they create.” Something as simple as saying “I love you,” to finish a phone call to a family member, as my family would do when I was growing up, is a perfect example of a small change you can make. My friends all thought it was funny and cute that my four brothers took part in saying “I love you,” but adding that little phrase to the end of a phone call with a loved one not only reinforces the message for you both, but adds to your life tens of thousands of endearments. Start today and find a new challenge that will enhance one area of your life. Remember, if life is great right now, up-level yourself. If life is plain old hard and already feels like a challenge, find a much needed self-care challenge to spice of your daily routine.

Your challenge is to peruse the space of discomfort by switching up your regular schedule and doing something that serves your heart. Maybe it is waking up in the morning 5 minutes earlier than usual to breathe deeply while moving through a Sun Salutation or two or to meditate so that you can start your day off with a more grounded perspective. Or your challenge could be career and passion oriented as it was for me, or perhaps it is a relationship challenge. You could challenge yourself to do something extra special each day for your partner or best friend, to make their life a little bit sweeter. If you are coasting, it is time to step up and find a challenge.

So how do you react when you face adversity? When something isn’t easy for you? Do you shy away, or do you stand tall with confidence and composure? Though it’s easier said than done, we should all try to thrive on challenge and change. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the most important relationship in your life: the one with yourself. The knowledge, strength, or boost in our relationship that we attain from a dedicated effort towards growth is great, but the overall message that our body receives is what’s really powerful. That message – “you can do it, you are good enough, you, yes you, are amazing” – is contagious. Not just for us as individuals, as we become more likely to pursue another challenge and grow but for others who see your power and feel inspired to take initiative in their path of growth as well. Change starts with the individual, sign up, check-in, decide today is the today to GROW, because you can!

The Beauty of Beach Yoga in Hawaii

Truth be told, practicing beach yoga in San Diego is what really got me “hooked” on yoga. I would walk home after my weekly outdoor practice with a big smile plastered to my face and a new outlook and clear perspective on my day. That might sound like the typical aftermath feeling of everyone’s yoga practice, but let me explain how it is so much more.

The experience of practicing yoga outside, with the ocean in front you, the sun on your face, and the ocean air to breathe is incredibly refreshing. Your body craves the pure oxygen, is drawn to the beautiful views, and appreciates the energizing boost of vitamin D from the sun. The peaceful feeling and deep respect that comes from interacting with the environment inspires and empowers you to get outside more – because it feels good!

Simply moving your mat outside adds quite a few challenges to your practice as well. The uneven terrain challenges your balance and core work. Every posture is brought to the next level, and small musculature adjustments throughout your whole body need to happen in order to maintain alignment and balance. If holding a handstand on solid, flat ground in the studio is easy, take your mat outside once a week to deepen your practice; you won’t be disappointed with the challenge.

In yoga class, teachers often speak about gratitude. Sometimes the comments might resonate with you, other times they might not. Beach yoga fills up your cup with gratitude…better yet, your cup is simply overflowing with gratitude by the end of class. Rather than think about gratitude as a broad idea or intention for class, gratitude is simply woven into the experience of soaking up such a gorgeous and heart warming experience: yoga outdoors. I am constantly thinking, “Wow this is my life, how lucky am I?” It’s easy to forget that we live in a breathtaking paradise, but a great way to remember that your life is real and you are in fact the one living this incredibly beautiful life is to try a beach yoga class.

Not only is the outdoor yoga experience awe inspiring, it also serves as a great reminder of how yoga began: outside in the elements, teacher to student, with the breath being the foundation of the whole practice. Students feel more inspired to take full inhalations of fresh ocean air at the beach. This provides clean oxygen to the body and will help to energize you all day long. Additionally, simply seeing the majestic and strong mountains as you hold mountain pose (tadasana) helps remind students to be strong, stable, and bold like a mountain. Balancing in tree pose (vrksasana) can often be humbling; however, while holding tree pose and simultaneously witnessing the trees sway in the wind, students are reminded that their tree might sway and that it’s fine, they can still be strong.

Beach yoga is tranquil and challenging. An outdoor yoga practice will leave you feeling more connected to your environment. It will force gratitude upon you, as it is impossible to not feel grateful for such a wonderful experience. Oceanfront sunset yoga in Hawaii, does it get any better?

Hello and thank you for reading the first edition of my monthly newsletter, Laura Mary Healthy Living! Though I am a yoga teacher by trade, I have so much more to share beyond just yoga, and this newsletter will be my place to do it. I have touched on many topics relating to health, spirituality, and, of course, yoga in my classes, but these brief moments are not enough to fully impart my philosophy on my students. Each month, I will present ideas for living a full and vibrant life, including recipes, spiritual thoughts, yoga posture breakdowns, yoga videos, and guest posts from my students on related and interesting topics. But what is “healthy living”, exactly? My picture of healthy living is whole body and mind, and it’s really an approach to life.

Rather than focusing on treating disease (dis-ease - when something is not at ease in the body/mind), my focus is on the way we approach our lives and interact with our environment. Yoga plays a roll, but so too does taking your yoga practice “off the mat” in whatever form you choose: hiking a mountain and connecting to nature, going for a run and burning through some pent up energy, celebrating a birthday, dancing in the rain, painting, or writing in your journal (see guest post by Derek Linsley, An Ode to Journaling, on Page 4). My hope is to motivate you readers to get outside your comfort zone; jump out and experience the joy of being the best version of you. Thank you so much for letting me share my passion and love for healthy and happy living. I hope you apply bits and pieces of Laura Mary Healthy Living to your life and watch the positive cyclical and contagious shifts unfold.

So who am I, exactly, to lecture you on how to live a healthy and more fulfilling lifestyle? Well, here is my story. I grew up in Wellesley, MA a small suburb of Boston, where my four brothers and parents raised me to be a strong but feminine woman. I was a two-sport NCAA athlete at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. My experience on the soccer and lacrosse fields taught me the disciplines of hard work, perseverance, and strength. After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Skidmore, I was hired as a clinical research assistant at the most prestigious psychiatric hospital in the world, McLean Hospital in Boston. At McLean, I worked on several psychopharmacology research projects investigating various drugs and how they worked in the treatment of mood disorders. Many of the patients were overweight due to medication weight gain side effects, lack of motivation, and food cravings. They were caught in a vicious cycle, in which weight gain led to depression, and depression led to more drugs and overeating. During the weekly study interviews the subjects chronicled episodes of binge eating. They described the cognitive dissonance they experienced between their knowledge of how to be healthy versus the willpower required to incorporate exercise and eating in moderation into their daily lives. It became clear to me that one’s mood was inextricably linked with the state of the physical body. I was both deeply moved by their personal stories and intrigued by the health related decisions that needed to be made and the reasons behind why those decisions were not followed through with action. As time passed I found my own interests drifting away from wanting to help individuals with mood disorders and more focused on the physical body and the etiology of obesity and risk and resilience factors related to disease.

My shifting interests brought me to San Diego, where I worked with a famous neuroscience researcher at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, Dr. Igor Grant, and a pioneering childhood obesity researcher, Kerri Boutelle. With this new position came a serious change of scenery; suddenly I was surrounded by the ocean, mountains, and sunny weather of beautiful Southern California. The experience of living there combined with my new body/mind research precipitated a full on love affair with yoga, which I picked up after college to help with the transition from full-time athlete to full- time researcher. I became a 200-hr certified yoga instructor and continued my daily practice. I noticed all of the shifts in my life. I was doing more and more of what I wanted to do. I volunteered every Saturday at the Del Mar Farmers Market and ate farm-fresh fruits and veggies weekly. I hiked every weekend and brought all of my roommates along with me. I enjoyed a quality vegan dinner with my brother and sister-in-law every Sunday night. Time was so sweet and so precious, and somehow, I finally understood this idea.

San Diego wasn’t the end game for me; I decided to go back to school, and I looked into graduate programs all over the country related to my personal interests in obesity. I chose to study under a well-renowned childhood obesity researcher at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa. I had never been to Hawai‘i, but within a few months I was flying out to the beautiful island of Oahu with no place to live and a few dollars in my pocket. I landed on a Friday night, found a place to live on Saturday, moved in on Sunday, and started my research position on Monday! There is a future newsletter article on the benefits of planning ahead somewhere in that experience. For the next year and a half, I was researching 20 hours per week, taking a full schedule of graduate-level courses, and teaching nightly yoga classes. Occasionally, I would find time to explore this beautiful island that I found myself on. I was in constant awe of the magnificence of Oahu. Living in Hawai‘i took the beauty of Southern California to the next level; it’s the closest I’ve felt to experiencing Heaven on Earth. Between moving forward with my own dreams of helping others and consuming my time with what made me smile, I started to shape my own view of public health. I hurried through the program in a year and a half and graduated as a Master of Public Health. I was hired to conduct full-time research at the University of Hawaii Cancer Center in Kaka‘ako. At the same time I was teaching roughly 10 yoga classes per week and found that, though the research I was doing was important, yoga allowed me to reach out and help a larger amount of people in a more intimate setting. My teaching reflects my passion and love of yoga and reaches tens of thousands of people. I can see the shifts first-hand that my students experience both on and off their mat, the same shifts I moved through as I began my love affair with yoga. I decided to hold off on submitting PhD program applications as I originally planned, and tried my hand at teaching yoga full-time.

And so here I am: full-time yoga teacher trying to broaden my audience and allow my students the best opportunity to live the life that everybody is capable of living. So you’re probably still wondering what “healthy living” is exactly, right? Get to the point already, LM! Well, I definitely won’t be able to explain it in these two pages. For now, I’ll point you in the right direction and elaborate over the coming months. In a nutshell, healthy living comes down to the management of two very broad topics: food and yoga. I think together these areas of life form a killer combo for health and happiness.

It all starts with food. I eat a vegan diet, and I have for 7 years now. All the recipes that I share in this newsletter will be vegan. If you don’t eat vegan or vegetarian, I encourage you to give them a try (starting with Carrot Ginger Soup on Page 3). They are all hearty and delicious, tested and approved favorites of mine and my friends, omnivores and vegans alike. But, don’t you worry - I am not the radical vegetarian who is going to think you are a horrible person for eating a hamburger. Vegan does not necessarily mean healthy (a pack of Oreos and a 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola qualifies as a vegan meal), and non-vegan doesn’t necessarily mean unhealthy. The more processed your food is, or the more chemicals, additives, fillers, and food dye that have been added, the further from the “source”, or its original form, it becomes. I try to eat as close to the source as possible. However, I will be the first to tell you that I am not perfect. I have my own vices, such as french fries; when I am starving or have taught six yoga classes in one day – bring on the french fries! I am also a fan of celebrating and sometimes that means enjoying a good margarita to cheers with someone special at the end of a long and awesome day. I try to find a balance of healthy and happy in eating; the recipes I will include in this newsletter encompass both. Your diet should make you feel good, vibrant, and awake. If you don’t, something is not right, switch it up!

Yoga practice rounds out the foundation of healthy living. Yoga is for everyone, not just the skinny, flexible, or ex-athletes. Nearly every day, people tell me, “I can’t do yoga; I’m so inflexible that I can’t even touch my toes!” I tell these people that yoga is a perfect match for them. Picture yourself as a clean slate, or an empty canvas; so many possibilities! However, yoga is a humbling journey. You will be challenged, and if you don’t approach your practice as a student you will fall on your face, quite literally. All of the asanas, or poses, represent a journey and when you string them together in flow, the experience is magical. I encourage people to just begin. Show up. Once you establish a regular yoga practice, your body, mind, and soul start to open up. Everything, and I mean everything, bubbles up to the surface, from your sprained ankle in high school, to your current desk job and tight hips, to your major heartbreak from 5 years ago. You will feel it all. But the biggest challenge is to begin; after that, sit back and watch your yoga practice and life change before your own eyes. Magic? Yes, it is magical, just wait and see. Yoga is more than just physical exercise. In fact, the asanas are just one of the “eight limbs” of yoga, described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which I will elaborate on in future newsletters. By adding a yoga practice to a healthy diet, you will start to feel more connected and aware of the state of your body and mind. You will notice that the foods you put into your body affect your yoga practice, both in terms of your ability to twist and handstand to your ability to relax and let go. Yoga is a great way to connect, to check-in with yourself and scope out the terrain of your body and mind, and to figure out how you can step-in and shake things up.

I feel grateful every day to be here, living, breathing and sharing what inspires me. Makes 4-6 servings.

Carrot GInger Soup

 

Fresh Ginger and a bit of lemon create for one vibrant, creamy, and colorful carrot soup. This soup is loaded with beta-carotene and is delicious. You can garnish with parsley, basil, dill weed, chive or any other fresh herb. Happy New Year!

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive or coconut oil

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

1.5 pounds carrots, coarsely chopped

1 medium Yukon Gold potato, peeled and chopped

1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger

Pink Himalayan Salt

5 cups vegetable broth, homemade or store-bought, or water

spices: cayenne or paprika/turmeric/chili powder

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives

Preparation:

1. In a large soup pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion, cover, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the carrots, potato, ginger, and salt to taste. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the broth and spices to taste, and bring to a boil.

2. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, until the veggies are soft (30-40 minutes).

3. Puree the soup mixture in the pot with an immersion blender or in a blender or food processor (Vitamix). This might require mixing in batches and adding additional broth to maintain desired consistency.

4. Pour mixture back to pot (if necessary), and reheat until hot. Stir in lemon to taste, adjusting seasonings as well if necessary. Pour soup into bowls and add desired garnish.

5. Enjoy!

Hello November,

I am not quite sure how you arrived so quickly. Let’s not talk about how long it has been since I’ve posted!

Life can get busy. We are all guilty of rushing from one thing to the next, always piling more onto our ever busy and overwhelming schedules. Even if you love what you do, sometimes, you need a break. When an unexpected break is handed to you, take it! Whether that break is a sweat session on your yoga mat, a trip to the gym, to your meditation cushion, to the beach, or to a coffee shop … s.a.v.o.r the time. We don’t allow ourselves enough breaks, where we can truly pause in soak in the feeling of treating ourselves and clearing our mind of all the clutter of life. Pausing to feel grateful for even being here in this world and to truly enjoy our lives.

This week, I had a few unexpected breaks; the universe will hand you ‘me time’ for a very important reason, so when it happens, enjoy it. Go bury yourself in a good book, write in your journal, go for a run, fold/twist/bend/handstand on your yoga mat, and smile as you enjoy some sacred time for yourself! That’s right, I think you should go nourish yourself! No, it isn’t selfish. In fact, by devoting time to yourself the time you spend with others becomes that much more valuable to both you and them.

Step back and reflect on how good you really have it. You are here, breathing, living, and surrounding yourself with people you love and in some manner sharing your love through your passion(s). Fill up on gratitude for all of those goodies that you already have in your life.

I didn’t have to search high and low for my gratitude-fill this week. This has been one gratitude filled week. Even though life has been quite busy, I am incredibly grateful for my life: my loving guy, my family, my forever friends, my students, my body, my health, and beautiful Oahu.

Okay, let's not talk about how long it has been since I've blogged. Let's just not even go there.

Life has been VERY busy and busy is good when you enjoy the content of busy. Before and after my vacation, i've had a packed schedule of teaching studio classes and lots of privates. LIFE is good. There are so many benefits to simply taking a break, for one, your body can rest, your mind can rest, but most importantly, you deserve a break. Taking a break is so valuable. It refreshes you, re-inspires you, reminds you that you are one productive busy bee. Switching off your monkey mind to pause, reminds you of all that you do.

By the time my wonderful vacation was over, I was ready again to jump into my full-time teaching schedule.

How was vacation?

One word: Magical.

Kauai, you are so gosh darn beautiful, none of the pictures on this blog post will do justice to your beauty. I will try to share as best I can. I went to visit one of my very best friends, Robin. Not only is this girl so adventurous, fun, lively, and beautiful, she reminds me of all the reasons why being alive rocks so much! Robin, is living in the moment. I had an amazing time with her. Here we go.

Right after landing, our first stop was to Kauai Juice Co., for some DELICIOUS, fresh, cold-pressed juice!

Kauai StyleNext, we stopped and soaked in some beautiful views en route to her North Shore abode.

Kauai StyleThen we decided to stop at the BlueRoom Cave. No one has EVER found the bottom. It is called the "BlueRoom Cave" because the way the sun hits and reflects on the water turns everything in there blue. I thought I was in heaven. The water is freezing cold, but rather than make you shiver to the core, it is like magic water that invigorates you and fills every cell up with energy, I know crazy, right? It was so refreshing, kind of creepy to swim in, knowing there was no bottom. We swam to the back of the cave. It was so awesome. Robin, always gets me to do stuff outside of my comfort zone, one of the many reasons I just adore this lovely girl. There is said to be a ginormous gecko that lives in the water. The trip was off to an amazing start, to say the least.

We went to beach after beach after beach after pond after river...Did you know Kauai is one of the wettest places on earth? With an average of over 472 inches or 39 feet (12 meters) of precipitation each year, Mt. Waialeale on Kauai is the rainiest and wettest spot on the planet.

One of my favorite aspects of Kauai was the slow paced lifestyle, I mean, it is really s.l.o.w. Check out the one car bridges:

Kauai StyleWe made a quick stop at cold pond, which sure was cold, but it too was invigorating. It's no wonder these folks from Kauai are so damn happy and beautiful. Around every corner they see beauty and there is a natural way to bask in the beauty whether it be in the ocean, a cold pond, river, or the blueroom cave.

We had so many amazing moments on Kauai and I was continuously blown away. From the fields, to the canyons and waterfalls, to the napali coast, to the sunsets, to the hikes, to the mountains, to the cute town of Hanalei, this blog will never be able to do the beauty of this lovely island justice. I landed in Honolulu after one amazing trip only to begin another vacation as I was meeting my friend Lauren in the airport! This time is was a staycation (with lots of yoga still to be taught) while my friend was here for one week. Our plan was to go the beach right away, however, the car had a flat tire.
